How God is like Duck Calls

As duck hunters our calls are a HUGE part of our gear. During the season our calls are never out of sight and are always within reach - just in case. Unfortunately, when duck season is over, the lanyard and calls get hung up. They hang there unthought of and unused for weeks at a time only to be picked up in passing to blow on the calls a few times. For many of us, myself included, our relationship with God is a lot like this. We hang God up until the "season" starts again.

What I mean by this is that we don't spend time praying or reading our Bibles unless we are struggling with something. Then, when the struggle, or, "season" is over, we put Him aside until we need Him again or go to church. In fact, many of us probably still spend more time on duck calls than we do reading our Bibles or praying and just spending time in His presence.

It is hard to remember to keep those duck calls with us all the time and to constantly spend time practicing with them. Our relationship with God is the same way for some reason. We only want to spend time with him when we "need" him or when it is convenient for us.

So at the end of the season do not just hang the lanyard up and only parctice here and there. In the same way do not set God off to the side until church service or you are struggling with something. Keep that lanyard or a call with you in the car, in the house, or out in the garage. The latter will probably keep you out of trouble with the Missus or the parents. Likewise spend time in the presence of God, whether it is in the car, out in the woods prepping for the season, or finishing that long list of honey do's.
